The purpose of your backstory is to tell:
How did you become who you are, and
Why do you act and think the way you do
It’s not for everyone and not about everything you did in life.
→ It's about people you want to help, and
→ it's about the things that they can relate to.
A well-crafted backstory has lots of benefits:
→ It helps you understand yourself better,
→ Present your unique experience and qualifications
→ Make people believe in you and follow you for help
This is how Justin Welsh recommends telling your backstory:
The obstacle: Should be relatable
The internal struggles: How we feel inside
The external struggles: Struggles that can be seen or heard
The change event: Critical decision that starts your transformation
The spark: The magic moment when you knew things were going to change
The guide: The person who lifts you up and helps you see your potential
The result: The continuation of the story to even greater success
Here’s my backstory:
The obstacle: Lost all my clients to the pandemic and moved to a small town
The internal struggles: Thought I need to be in a big city to succeed
The external struggles: My friends ridiculed me for living in a small town
The change event: I stopped everything else; started building my LinkedIn
The spark: Got my first client, then my second, then my third, and it didn't stop
The guide: My friend (who also designs for my clients) helped me see my potential
The result: Built a location-independent business around what I love
But it's not just about filling out the template.
It’s about being authentic and communicating how you ended up being the person you are and why you do what you do.
[Send me a message if you'd like me to evaluate your backstory.]
That’s it for this week.
